SHED HUNTING

A GUIDE TO FINDING WHITE-TAILED DEER ANTLERS

Whoops!

March 2, 2010

Has it really been two weeks since I’ve posted on here? Yikes! Sorry! And during shed season, no less! Well, I guess I’ve been busy and frustrated. Yes, Joe Shead has been having trouble finding sheds lately! I’ve been in several good-looking spots, most without any other human tracks, and yet I’ve been coming home empty! But hey, it’s March. March has always been my favorite month, even before I ever found my first shed. I love winter, but I really love the transition to spring. Today I was outside with just a sweatshirt, walking through soft mud for the first time. Ahhh, I love it! Of course, that was on a sunny hillside. There are still plenty of areas here with knee-deep snow, too, but I decided I didn’t feel like walking through that!  But I have struggled lately. The last few times out I’ve been anxious to find one, and I notice when I get that way, I walk faster and never seem to find any. So today I was just out walking and enjoying the nice weather. I was in a small area, maybe only 5 or 10 acres. I’ve already pulled 3 sheds out of there this season, so I didn’t expect to find any more. But success always seems to strike when you least expect it. I was actually on the phone chatting with a guy who found his first shed of the year this weekend when I spotted those magical tines sticking up. Funny thing was, about 3 or 4 weeks ago I found a shed within 15 yards of this one, and as I filmed the lead-in to that shed, I was standing only 10 feet from where I found today’s shed. I don’t think this shed was there that day. I don’t think there was that much snow that it was buried. Nevertheless, it felt great to get one. It has been far too long without feeling a fresh shed in hand. This guy is a 4-point side with a busted G-3. At first I thougt it was a match to another shed I found there a few weeks ago, but when I got home, I realized the sheds were both right sides. Guess there could be a few more out there! Well folks, it’s March. A lot of bucks have dropped, although some are still holding out. But spring is in the air, the snow is melting, I saw robins today … it is time to enjoy the weather and find some sheds. Good luck!

  1. Nice going, Joe. Glad your jinx is off. Maybe your good fortune will rub off on your D.C. connection. I’ll keep trying at this end for that elusive first.

  4. ‘Been dying to read a new entry … thanks Joe!

Just about all the bucks I see here in the Texas hill country are still carrying, but it’s getting close. As a matter of fact, I picked up #3 for the year driving past the church about three blocks from my house last Sunday … just laying on the church lawn! I guess that gives new meaning to “road hunting”!

    Good luck to all …

  7. Hey Dan,
I was just thinking about you Texas guys. Interesting to hear so many bucks are still carrying there. I’ve always wondered what it’s like there. Awesome finding one on the church yard too! Still some bucks carrying here too, but a lot have shed.

  8. Sweet. It’s always nice to spot tines after a little drought. Congrats. Took my boy out to a new area and we picked up 8 to include my largest 4 pt side. It scored right at 60 in…not bad for a 4 pt! Our snow has melted alot as well and it’s welcomed. Calling for a little snow possible this weekend. Hope not. Lookin forward to seeing what else you stumble upon. Good luck. 24 for the count so far…

  9. Hey John,
Sorry to hear about all the snow. Still a lot of snow here too in places. Knee deep in a lot of areas. I’m targeting the sunny hillsides and the conifers where there is less snow and even bare ground in some areas. Your first freshie is just around the corner!

  10. Yesterday i found 3 sheds in some woods around my house. A pair that were only about 3 feet apart, Its pretty cool because i found this bucks sheds thee years ago about 60 yards from where i found them this time. I have no idea ware this buck hides during hunting season because me and my dads friends hunt these woods so hard during the bow season! And my last shed was about 20 yards from some ones back yard.
